My alarm went off at 5am, I rolled over and read this and it was a great read to kick off a crazy morning. Sorry and congrats on being sick for real this time
There's something nice about feeling like you've earned the sympathy and the fussing, a real concrete problem and nothing in your head...but of course illness is never enviable, and I hope you are well again soon <3
(for reading stuff on being sick I love The Invisible Kingdom by Meghan O'Rourke)
Some time in the dark ages, my ol' ma had pericarditis and it was equally as tricky then as it seems to be now, to work out the what, the why and then how to fix. Rest, breathe and enjoy the sort of peace despite the lack of bolus.
As a small girl with what turned out to be coeliac disease I was drawn to the Robert Louis Stevenson child who marched his soldiers around the Land of Counterpane.
I was always minded of white candlewick fabric and, being just a bit pretentious, muddled Counterpane with la compagne and assumed he must have been related to Napoleon.
I thought I was having a heart attack once, a few years ago. Went to the ER of the tiny French town where I live, and the kind and twinkly old doctor diagnosed me with "anxiety", and said something about the etymology of the word, it's origin meaning "to squeeze, to grip", and then we talked about literature and he gave me Valium and sent me on my way. Ah, France! I thought. Went to check with my regular GP, and he tutted and said no, I'd had severe bronchitis a few weeks earlier, this was clearly a case of pericarditis, he was seeing a lot of it these days, in the wake of COVID. He sent me to a cardiologist and got me the proper treatment. And I, still in the wistful literary mode of the old ER doctor, thought: "ah! Pericarditis! My heart swells, but the walls around it are too rigid to contain it..."
Sorry you’re sick. May the doctors get it taken care of soon.
We've missed you here! From John Boorman's Excalibur:
"Do nothing. Be still. Sleep. Rest in the arms of the Dragon. Dream."
Hope they figure out the issue, take care of yourself in the meantime!
Oh no! Get well soon!
Echoing the others, and adding, I dearly hope you have picked up some excellent pajamas.

Congratulations on your real illness! (Hope it's not too bad and they treat you well)

Whoah. get well soon! Such good writing. After enjoying BRIGHT SWORD mightily, I'm belatedly on to THE MAGICIANS.
Sorry that you’re sick but thrilled that you’re using it as an excuse to bring up Woolf.
Thanks for the update. Hope you feel better soon!
Oh, argh. Hope things are better soonest.
Ugh. I hope you’re up and around before too long. I was in the best shape of my life when I got MS. Nothing’s been the same since.
